I’ve been lucky to have so many role models throughout my life: my parents, siblings, advisors, colleagues, and more. Each has helped me shape my perspectives of the world, my passions, and my goals. However, my Grandpa, perhaps more than anyone else, was among the first to inspire my love of science.
Ever since I was young, he challenged me with more than just mind puzzles and brain teasers; he challenged me to look at the world from the perspective of a scientist. Whether related to the universal role of Carbon in all of life or the endless potential applications of chemistry for improving the ways humans interact with the world, he was never shy to share his passions with those around him. Nonetheless, for us grandchildren, he always encouraged us to first and foremost find happiness in our lives.
My Grandpa was man with an intense drive to positively contribute to the world through his work. This attitude was infectious, and as I grew older he never ceased to foster my interests in medicine. He helped me to develop as a scientist, a thinker, and a scholar with ambition. Even as I am just now beginning my career, I will always strive my best to improve the world just as he has shown me.
I will miss you, Grandpa, and all of the times we have laughed, played games, and shared our favorite foods together. But I will also always remember that you and your carbon will continue to cycle throughout this world that we love.
